With reference to my despatch No. 95 of the 4th February relative to the deportation of the Bell family from Pakhoi, I have the honour to transmit to you herewith copies of five despatahes Nos. 3, 5, 6, 8 and 10, which
have been received from His Majesty's Consul at Kiungohow, and which give a good description of the dangers and
difficulties of the situation with which Mr. R.8. Pratt
has had to deal both during and after the occupation of
that port and the surrounding districts of Hainan Island
by the "Red" Cantonese færges.
2. On receipt of Mr. Pratt's despatch No. 6 I
telegraphed to the Commander-in-Chief through His
Excellency the Governor of Hongkong stating that in view
of possibly serious developments at Kiungohow I hoped that
he would be able in co-operation with Sir Cecil Clementi
to arrange for assistance to the British commnities at
Pakhoi and Hoihow in regard to the provisioning and to the
maintenance of communicatione with Hongkong on the lines
suggested in His Majesty's Consul's above mentioned
despatch.
3. I was, however, not unduly apprehensive of any
possible developments in the situation at Kiungchow in
